From this timeline I am able to form a basic understanding of why and how women were given the right to vote. Firstly, I believe that the consistency of the suffragette movement during 1912 and 1913 meant that something had to be done. The window smashing followed by letter box bombing and then marches didn't go unnoticed and so couldn't be ignored. Secondly, the Maternity Benefit Act would have shown the women that they were finally being considered a little bit more and most likely would have encouraged them to push for more rights.

I also believe that the failures that happened for england during these years such as the Titanic sinking, strikes, Bloody Sunday and the mining explosion, the UK couldn't afford many more tragedies. These were most likely the two worst years for the UK. With threats of WW1 starting too, the war between the women and men had to be put to an end at least.

The modernism that came out of these two years would've influenced the women to fight back and stand up for what they believed in.

I think the state would've been afraid of a revolution taking place as many were already revolting.
