Character Research
I've been working on my characters accent. Because Eve is from a working class background she would most likely have a cockney accent or one that is influenced by her cockney surroundings. I have also made the conclusion that she would probably try to speak more properly when around Celia because she probably wants to impress her and seem worthy. This is why I'm trying to give Eve a Eustory accent:
I've also began a character profile but it's going to need updating once I've spoken to the other actresses that are also playing Eve (such as age) so that we all create a similar character:
Laban Effort:
I have found it really difficult to distinguish a set laban effort for Eve Douglas because her character changes dramatically throughout the play. However, with the first Eve that I play, I find that what I find most difficult to decide is whether her time is quick or slow and whether her energy/flow is free or bound.
In terms of timing I can vouch for Eve being quick because she's scared and constantly looking around her because she's always taking in her new surroundings. Also Londoners in general are usually quite quick and direct because they have jobs and places to be going. However I understand her being slow for these exact same reasons. She's unsure of the new things happening around her and so she's slow and cautious. Therefore I think I have to combine her jittery quickness and overwhelmed slowness together to create a dynamic character that delivers the same emotions to the audience.
In addition, I can also understand her energy/flow being free because she's feminine and doing what she wants rather than what the state wants. But I can also invision her being bound out of fear (like when she is smoking in the park but stays out of the alterations on stage) or worry of doing something wrong -hence her always being sure of what she's doing. Juxtaposing her freedom and boundness will also reward the realistic relationships that she creates with different characters (E.g she's bound when with Celia in some environments however when in the prison, her bound energy becomes free when she's with Celia because she's the closest thing to home).
I'd say that her weight is gentle because she's feminine, unsure and is not powerful due to being working class. Her working class background makes her less feminine than Celia and her accent also draws some of these ladylike qualities out of her. But Eve definitely reflects a gentle weight rather than a heavy one.
For these reasons exactly I can not place Eve into one specific category but I can place her under what I think she resembles most of the time. The laban effort that I would give Eve is 'Flick'. I believe Eve's WEIGHT IS GENTLE, her TIME IS SUDDEN and her SPACE IS INDIRECT (FAST). However, this being her main embodiment, I also believe that like any situation of survival of the fittest, Eve changes her embodiment to suit her environment and so often leaves Flick behind to become something else -but Flick is the laban effort that she always goes back to.
